This recent installation by Iron Age Manufacturing Ltd. features a custom exterior railing system designed for a challenging seaside staircase — built directly into the rock face and exposed to constant wind, rain, and ocean air.
Designing for Coastal Conditions: More Than Aesthetics
When working near the ocean, materials and finishes must withstand humidity, salt corrosion, and thermal expansion.
For this project, Iron Age used epoxy-coated structural steel and industrial-grade paint systems designed to resist corrosion and maintain their finish in Vancouver’s wet coastal climate.
The minimalist vertical picket design preserves visibility toward the waterfront while providing full safety and code compliance. It’s a balance of form and function, ensuring the structure feels integrated with the natural stone surroundings.
Precision Fabrication and Installation
No two steps in this staircase were identical — each railing section required site-specific measurement, digital modeling, and custom fabrication.
Iron Age’s installation team engineered adjustable base plates and custom brackets to achieve millimeter-level alignment on uneven stone treads and natural rock surfaces.
Every weld, anchor, and fastener was chosen for long-term stability and corrosion resistance, proving that craftsmanship matters most when conditions are toughest.
