From Flat Steel to a Soccer Ball: Custom Metal Fabrication at Iron Age
At Iron Age Manufacturing, many of our projects begin with architectural drawings, specifications, and clearly defined requirements. Railings, gates, staircases, screens, and other architectural metalwork are a major part of what we fabricate every day.
But every once in a while, a project comes through the shop that is completely different.
This custom steel soccer ball was one of them.
What appears at first to be a simple object presented an interesting fabrication challenge: how do you take flat pieces of steel and turn them into the recognizable geometry of a soccer ball?
Turning a Familiar Shape Into Steel
A soccer ball looks simple until you try to build one from metal.
Unlike a manufactured ball that naturally takes its shape when inflated, a fabricated steel version has to achieve its form through geometry. Each individual piece has to work with the pieces around it to gradually create the final three-dimensional shape.
The process involved cutting the individual steel panels, positioning and fitting them together, welding the connections, and carefully working around the structure as the ball took shape.
Piece by piece, flat steel became a three-dimensional object.
It is a relatively small project compared with many of the architectural installations that move through our shop, but the fabrication principles behind it are very familiar to our team: accuracy, fit-up, welding, problem-solving, and craftsmanship.
Custom Fabrication Is About Solving Problems
Projects like this are a good reminder that custom metal fabrication is not simply about following a standard manufacturing process.
Sometimes there is no standard solution.
An idea may begin as a sketch, an architectural detail, a reference image, or simply a concept. The fabricator then has to determine how that idea can actually be constructed — what materials to use, how the individual components should connect, how the geometry will come together, and how to achieve the intended appearance.
That problem-solving process is an important part of what we do at Iron Age.

The steel soccer ball was fabricated in-house by the Iron Age team in Vancouver, BC.

The finished piece is simple, recognizable, and a little unexpected — but behind it is the same combination of planning, precision, and hands-on craftsmanship that goes into much larger architectural projects.
